Measuring Racial Equity: A Cross-Case Study of Three Washington Artist-Serving Organizations
Presenter: Jhenn Whalen
In 2012, three Seattle service organizations noted an obvious absence of artists of Color in their grant applications. Beginning with focus groups and surveys with POC in the community, the organizations forged a single partnership (ArtistsUp) and developed an experimental grant application that still informs their work today. Five years later, these organizations have diverged onto separate paths but still continue with racial equity as a beacon for how programs, communication, and ongoing research is informed. This paper will give a brief overview of their history, trends amongst the collaboration, and questions each organization is still grappling with.
